ABSTRACT

An analysis of the dying process and the burial practices of people may give us understanding of their values and culture. The basis of the care of the dying by Native Americans lies in nature and healing rituals. The use of medicine by Native Americans was a major part of their healing or caring practices for the ill and dying. By studying the health practices and the burial and mortuary customs, one can learn much of the philosophy and religion of a people. The rich traditions of the 300 or so North American Native groups can be expressed through an analysis of their mortuary and burial practices. Culturally, the focus on people rather than things has lead to many cultural practices that distinguish Native American culture. The length and intensity of public grieving also tends to reflect one’s social value-Disposal methods may also reflect attitudes toward the dead.
