ABSTRACT

All conscious human activity is a form of spirituality; however, what is commonly spoken of as spirituality is what might be called “self-aware spirituality,” that is an awareness of oneself as a unique center of knowledge and valuation. This spirituality is a two-edged sword. This self creation demands terrible responsibility and the loneliness that comes with responsibility. Since the person is a meaning seeking being, spiritual pain is produced when one has the sense that his/her life is meaningless. The language may differ, but they agree on the idea of self creation. Spirituality is fundamental to the human person. Spirituality shows itself primary as a continual quest for meaning. The dying and bereaved teach us that the processes in which they move occur because of the meanings that they have found in their own lives and the lives of their loved ones.
