ABSTRACT
This chapter argues that while aviation’s regulatory environments may appear ideally suited to a knowledge management environment, the application of knowledge management practices to the implementation of regulations may offer considerable efficiencies and flexibility. The aerospace industry is regulated by a variety of agencies across a number of national and regional boundaries. As previously identified, the competency and authority of individuals is another pillar of airworthiness and safety assurance. The aerospace industry would be as guilty as any other in this regard. Creating the right environment for interaction of staff represents another challenge to the aerospace industry. The aerospace industry is characterized by a number of factors seen as significant drivers for establishing knowledge management systems within organizations. The aerospace industry's business and operating environment presents some challenges to the implementation of knowledge management initiatives. Increasing the available knowledge and making it more readily available may reduce process overheads and ensure better use of key people.
