ABSTRACT

The Web has become a major resource for people seeking information about health, education, and government services. Many Web sites that convey information on these topics have been carefully crafted with rubrics intended to enhance site usability. The study reported here continues in a similar vein by investigating how intra-article navigation affects readers' browsing behavior, perceptions, and comprehension of lengthy articles orthopedic surgery on an informational site. To test our hypotheses, we remotely administered an Internet-based study investigating the effect of four intra-article navigation conditions. The chapter discusses the portion of the data with SPSS 11.5 at this time, and the results are very telling in terms of the experimental conditions and our hypotheses. The presentation of lengthy articles as multiple Web pages presents a number of challenges that are less problematic or nonexistent when such information is presented in print.
