ABSTRACT

From the perspective that grief is a natural human reaction to any loss, it is the circumstances of the loss and/or the world view of the bereaved that causes complicated grief. Loss by death of a traumatic or tragic nature can facilitate complicated grief. The perspective and the choices of the griever at the time of death can cause later complications in grief reconciliation. Drawing from the examples and comments shared by the respondents to the survey conducted for this chapter, the chapter includes verbatim responses which help to demonstrate various points being made. In the face of contrary cultural, religious, or family perspectives, the practice of viewing can only be offered as being considered a benefit by many, experts and grievers alike. The funeral director, or other counselor, can only present information and choices as is deemed appropriate without any investment in the outcome.
