ABSTRACT

Using humor, music, and art are effective ways to provide social support for children who are experiencing complicated grief. Various techniques ranging from story-telling to humor exist for aiding children who are grieving. Support from adults is required for children to maintain their self-esteem and to manage loss. Children need help to make choice. Music effects one’s mind and body. Joyful music can elevate one’s mood and encourage laughter. Deanna Edwards (1993) indicates that music is not just entertainment, but it is also a powerful therapy and teaching tool. Music is more than just sound. It has atmosphere and to some degree dramatic action. As a painter uses physical paints and the sculptor uses clay, the musician uses his or her voice, singing ability, words, message, attitudes, adaptation, and musical ability to provide a musical message for the listener. The listener brings a capacity for hearing, interpreting, and reliving the musical emotions of the creator.
