ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book presents research developed by authors as they apply, test, and revise the research approach developed in The Point of Production. It examines the unintended effects of environmental regulation on workers in agriculture and the situation of hazardous waste workers and emergency responders at the intersection of occupational and environmental health. The book focuses on the implementation of legislation that addressed environmental problems at the point of production—toxics use reduction. It discusses the study of the role of workers in pollution prevention and the intersection of labor relations with gender relations, thus developing an important subject that was, again, mentioned but not much developed in The Point of Production. The book also examines some of the practical issues involved in conducting occupational health research in the contested terrain of the workplace.
