ABSTRACT

What is a 3D model? And in what way is this new type of information revolutionising research in archaeology? After an introduction concerning the impact 3D acquisition technologies are having in archaeological practice, the chapter will discuss the theoretical and methodological implications connected with the introduction of a third dimension in support of archaeological thinking. In this chapter, examples from several international excavations will be presented in order to provide practical references on how 3D models and simulation environments are used to interpret the past and what their consequences and implications are for archaeological knowledge-making.
