ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the role of the volunteer in the care of the terminal patient and among other aspects discussing the role of the volunteer in a health care team, qualifications and selection of the volunteer, training programs, and special problems faced by the volunteer who works exclusively with the dying patient. In the case of the terminal patient, the volunteer plays three roles: companion and friend, advocate, and educator. Beside serving as friend and companion, the volunteer is in an advantageous position to act as advocate on behalf of the dying patient and family. The volunteer also serves as educator, a role that involves assisting the patient and family to cope with dying and bereavement. Although volunteerism is increasing in our society and all segments of our population are involved in volunteer programs, not every person is suited, psychologically or otherwise, for work with the dying patient.
