ABSTRACT

This paper is concerned with anthropology’s contribution to the study of aging, a subject matter area where each of us has the dubious privilege of doing participant observation. Although some of the studies which will be cited were actually carried out by other behavioral scientists, all of those discussed are “anthropological” in the sense that they are either:

cross cultural,

holistic in conception,

concerned with predictable patterns of traditional behavior, or

produced by researchers who identify as professional anthropologists.
