ABSTRACT

This chapter explores older adult sibling relationships in the following contexts or areas: caregivers for parents; caregivers for each other; reconciling past differences; friendship or estrangement; and death, changes in family structure and roles. It discusses suggestions for enhancing and using sibling relationships as an important part of the support system for older adults. Not intended as a research report or an exhaustive review of professional literature, the chapter is based on professional observations made in more than 20 years as a multigenerational therapist, counseling older adults and their families and training professionals who work with older adults around the country. The stress of the caregiving and the parent’s illness will break through the veneer of politeness, covering the anger that underlies many sibling relationships. Various studies have shown that siblings can function as an insurance policy for older adults.
