ABSTRACT

The general public shapes its opinions on health matters from both its own experiences with the health care system and the information it gleans from media sources of radio, television, newspapers, and periodicals. Public opinion is also influenced by popular culture found in tabloids and paperback books bought on newsstands or in supermarkets and discount pharmacies. Mindbend relates the story of Arolen Corporation, a large pharmaceutical enterprise, which through the use of violently coercive behavior modification techniques has recruited many renown physicians to do medical care and research work. In everyday reality, the pharmaceutical industry is connected with other health product companies through interlocking directorates. On an international level, the global drug industry is controlled by a relatively small number of firms based in the United States, Western Europe, and Japan. Multinational pharmaceuticals have resisted disseminating sufficient information concerning toxicity of their drugs being sold in Latin America.
