ABSTRACT

The rapidity and scope of the trend in the organization of health care is phenomenal in that proprietary corporate forms only began in the United States in the late 1960s. Typological analysis of the array of health care providers and institutions has usually been by ownership: the largest, being the voluntary, private "not-for-profit" segment; the fastest growing, being the proprietary segment; and the severely contracting government segment, including local, state, and federal programs. The private practice of physicians represents the bulk of ambulatory care, right now at least. A series on Industry and Health Care was produced to inform corporate leaders on how to affect major change in the delivery system. The corporate class may come to further realize a strategic necessity to integrate health services for valued employees under tighter control. The Reagan administration ushered in a dramatic alteration in American domestic as well as foreign policy.
