This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the key concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book discuses the importance of stopping and pausing to consider what other questions can be asked of policy, fact patterns and case law in order to consider gender as a factor and to look at things differently. The chapter focuses exclusively on equality law and citizenship and can thus only tell part of the story. The Court of Justice of the European Union is clearly a key driver for some of the most significant developments in equality law, it has also missed many an opportunity to advance women's rights. The chapter analysis has shown that the Court is often blind to gender and to possible unintended consequences of EU law and policy and its own decisions. The Court must, move away from its focus on market citizenship and economically underpinned rationales.
