ABSTRACT

This concluding chapter reflects on experience in Australia, Japan and Korea in preventing and dealing with match-fixing in sport, and promoting integrity. It further compares and contrasts the contexts for approaches to combating match-fixing in each jurisdiction and potential future trends in each jurisdiction, as well as the need for harmonisation in this area of law and regulation in this dynamic area of sports. This chapter focuses on three commonalities amongst the three jurisdictions highlighted by the narratives in this volume: first, the role that strong leadership plays in reform processes. Second, this chapter highlights the lack of consideration of attributes such as gender in studies of match-fixing in all jurisdictions. Finally, amongst common future challenges, the chapter suggests that three trends facing all three jurisdictions will particularly challenge law enforcement and sporting associations: the increasing pressure to achieve international harmonisation, the rise of cross-border leagues and the expansion of e-sports.
