ABSTRACT

Olympic studies continue to enjoy a certain kind of popularity in the sport and physical education departments of universities throughout the world. For instance, Olympic studies are a central part of modules in many BA and MA classes. Without doubt, the high quality of content delivery in the classes and programmes of Olympic studies is profiting much from the excellent amount of research on the Olympic Movement available as books, chapters in edited collections, and in journal articles. The idea to publish the special collection, entitled 'Olympic Perspectives', has been the result of the tripartite relationship between the University of Western Ontario, Canada, Victoria University, Melbourne, Australia, and the German Sport University Cologne, Germany. Panels organized by sport historians and sport sociologists focused largely on historical and sociocultural aspects of the modern Olympic Movement. The lectures were well received, becoming the stimulus for this special collection.
