ABSTRACT

This chapter investigates whether there is a connection between fit and disposal of clothing. It focuses on why the rate of clothing disposal is so high in Norway, the United Kingdom and comparable countries: 30 kg annually per UK inhabitant and 24 kg annually per Norwegian. By studying the factors leading to clothing disposal, the chapter hopes to discuss what clothing designers and tailors working in ready-to-wear clothing production can do in their practices to maximize the user period. Life cycle assessment (LCA) studies show that the use phase, as measured by the average usage time, has the greatest environmental impact during the life cycle of a garment. To reduce the environmental impacts of clothing consumption, it is important to discuss what changes can lead people to wear their clothes for longer. The chapter focuses on fit in clothing with the practice of pattern construction in mind.
