ABSTRACT

This chapter analyses a specific cultural manifestation that had great influence on the work of designers and architects. It explores Modernism and its subsequent expressions as real and tangible cultural manifestations of the western world. The chapter focuses on contributing new and useful knowledge to this field by proposing an alternative to production, manufacturing and distribution based on these previously mentioned manifestations. One of the most important premises on which Modernism rests is the concept of morality. The precursors of this movement understood that the way to address moral rightfulness in design and development was by exploding accepted conceptions of truth and demonstrating that the way to truth was through simplicity. Research has found that the idea of simplicity is rooted in the collective thinking of contemporary design. A production system that would take into greater consideration the resources of craftsmanship would also benefit from the reduction of transportation, distribution, shipping, retail, and therefore all intermediaries.
