ABSTRACT

Sense of place' has become a central concept in both geography and sociology and the sociologist Baldwin describes it as 'a way to understand the wider world through localized human–environment relationships'. In most local communities there are change processes and there is a need to gain more knowledge about the relationship between sense of place and landscape perceptions, and on the relationship between sense of place and peoples' willingness to contribute to rural landscape management. The ten success criteria identified for designing a sense of place that contribute to cultural sustainability are: including engagement, exploring attachment, practicing diversity, realizing identity, adjusting uniqueness, humanizing technology, economizing values, criticizing systems, recycling principles and identifying fore-meaning. Culture can be seen as an integral part of the social because both the social domain and the cultural domain are related to human behaviour, peoples' traditions and their cultural heritage.
