ABSTRACT

The goal of this chapter is to give a general overview of morphology, describing key terms and ideas that are important to understanding word formation processes. The paper begins with definitions of types of morphemes, including inflectional and derivational processes. I then review different theoretical approaches to morphology within linguistic theories, followed by a discussion of some of the typological distinctions seen in morphological paradigms cross-linguistically. Finally, I conclude the chapter with a brief consideration of psycholinguistic accounts of morphological processing.
