ABSTRACT

Morphological processing has been a key focus for many studies on reading, writing, and vocabulary development. Across these studies, the theoretical frameworks and methodology used to carry out the research have varied greatly. This variability raises many questions: for instance, what is morphological awareness? How does it differ from morphological processing? How do we determine what constitutes implicit or explicit processing? How are morphological tasks conceptually constructed? In the present chapter, answers to these questions are proposed to set the stage for a unified framework in the systematic study of morphological processing. We also propose an approach to classifying morphological processing tasks according to the cognitive operation they elicit and the nature of the material involved (oral and/or written).
