ABSTRACT

Adolescents in the foster care system face severe challenges such as repeated trauma, loss of attachment, low self-esteem, and identity confusion. This chapter discusses the common challenges associated with the foster care system, the struggles and strengths of adolescents in foster care, and how art therapy can be instrumental in cultivating healthy esteem and a sense of identity. Art therapy is inherently suited to the needs of adolescents, and its organic nature gives the flexibility and versatility needed in trauma work. While the life-long ramifications of early childhood trauma are well known, all too often youth in foster care do not have consistent access to therapy services. This chapter also discusses the importance of early and consistent counseling, as well as a case study done by the author.
