ABSTRACT

For most children in foster care, reunification with their legal parents is often the initial goal. Historically, court-ordered visitation has been the primary intervention to maintain and repair family relationships while minimizing the traumatic effects of the separation itself. Family visits typically occur in agency settings that have limited support and resources to promote family engagement. This chapter will discuss the potential benefits of pairing the community setting of a children’s museum with a community-based art therapy approach to better support parents and children navigating the child welfare system during family visits.
