ABSTRACT

This chapter explores art as a communicative tool for children and youth. As developmental factors influence young people’s ability to verbalize emotions and complex experiences, the modality of art can serve as a nonverbal and natural form of communication. Through inherent properties of art media and the creative process, young people can express themselves in visual yet equally descriptive ways. Examining material through developmental and art therapy lenses, this chapter outlines fundamental qualities of art that yield to its developmentally appropriate, expressive, and therapeutic nature. Theory is paired with detailed case vignettes to highlight art’s ability to foster communication and resilience for young people in widespread stages and life circumstances throughout the course of development.
