ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a comprehensive case report of a family receiving Parent-Based Prevention. In the family illustrated, the mother describes a past diagnosis of anorexia nervosa, from which she has recovered, and a current obsessive-compulsive disorder. She significant weight and shape concerns and a very narrow diet. The father does not report any body image or weight management issues, and is hesitant about the consequences of having more open communication with his wife. The parents are concerned about the eating habits and weight of their preschool daughter, and express some specific concerns regarding their toddler son. Both parents wanted to focus on reducing the amount of conflict during mealtimes and expanding their children’s diet, but they both mention Father’s long work hours outside home and Mother’s stressful reactions around feeding as the main barriers for implementing change. The parents decided to focus on eating what they labeled as a “family-style dinner”; that is, with all the food placed in bowls on the table and each family member choosing which food they wanted. The couple are able to the maternal eating and weight concerns as directed toward their children throughout their participation in the manualized intervention.
