ABSTRACT

Music and linking objects are very important components of adolescent grief rituals. The adolescent grief experience is different from that of the child or adult. In order to effectively understand adolescent grief, it is important to understand adolescent development. Death of a significant person during adolescence can affect interpersonal relationships and the developmental tasks. A review of some early literature on the effects of parental death during adolescence linked the death to a number of psychological difficulties. The adolescent is already racing a struggle in trying to separate emotionally and physically from his parents. Experiencing the death of a sibling during adolescence, as with the death of a parent, may also affect developmental levels and interpersonal relationships. The death of a friend causes a sense of doom for the future as the adolescent realizes the fragility of life. The death of other significant people in the life of an adolescent can also have an important effect on the adolescent's well-being.
