ABSTRACT

C. Miller Fisher (CMF), emeritus professor of Neurology, who died on April 14, 2012, was a principal founder of modern stroke neurology. Amongst his many contributions to the field were his findings that extra-cranial carotid artery disease and atrial fibrillation were frequent causes of ischemic stroke. The discovery of these two potentially preventable sources of ischemic events swept away long-standing theories of vasospasm and of middle cerebral artery thrombosis as the primary causes of cerebral ischemia, opening a new era of stroke diagnosis and management.
