ABSTRACT

When I got my internship in surgery at the MGH in 1963, the annual salary was $800 ($900 if you were married). By July, when I started, my salary was increased to $3,000, but they took away the Sunday dinner for families (which was not only the best meal of the week for everyone, but also a focal point for families to meet and make friendships) and, of course, taxes took away much of the pay raise.
