ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a survey of comparative studies on India and China. The achievements of the Chinese economy are compared with those of India for the period 1950-72. A postscript describes comparative growth in food production during the period 1969-73, rates of growth in industrial production for 1973 and 1974, and relative developments in income distribution, unemployment, and food consumption. The chapter presents the basic study statistics on rates of growth in grain output, industrial production and national product. These are based on official Indian sources and as many as eleven different estimates for China. The analysis of inequality in India and China starts with a broad description of the policies propagated in each country with respect to problems of inequality. These policies, which indicate commitments to the solution of the problems in both countries, appear to have met with contrasting conditions at the level of implementation, where China has been more successful in alleviating inequalities than India.
