ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with the design of accommodation for students, but is also relevant to accommodation that is occupied for a limited period by other groups of independent, single people, such as 'spring-board' accommodation for young professionals. Project budgets are determined by the level of rents that students can afford or are willing to pay, and this is directly reflected in the size of the study bedrooms and extent of other facilities provided in the scheme. Where accommodation is designed for a university, there will generally be a concern to make the students feel part of the university community. The design of the building and landscape can help to integrate the university and its students within the community, and it can also help to avoid potential conflict. Universities rarely have accommodation for all of their students, and priority is usually given to first year students who need support to settle into the university community.
