ABSTRACT

Mechanical movement of people in buildings is highly effective but due to the high cost, must be expertly designed to achieve the requisite operating efficiency. This chapter provides some basic design information. But it must not be used to bypass the fundamental principle that a design team should include expert input on the very complicated matter of circulation and the physical constraints, psychological aspects and longterm sustainability of the building. All people should be able to reach the main entrance of the building from the site boundary or designated car parking provision in a way that is suitable and safe. The design of handrails needs to take account of the principle that all people, regardless of age, gender or ability should be able to use them. Mechanical devices for moving people around buildings are now essential aspects of all large building design and they involve significant energy demands and safety backups for when energy supplies are restricted.
