ABSTRACT

Sports facilities come in many different shapes and sizes, from a sandpit in a park where a casual game of petanque is played, through a small community tennis club, school or university facilities, to a national stadium or even an international 'sports city'. Sports that are played on courts of various different configurations can be played both indoors or outdoors and often on a number of different surfaces. The places where sport can occur are virtually limitless. The category of sports is conducted on a track, sometimes in individual competition and sometimes as team events. Pool-based sports are obviously conducted in standard length swimming pools, although their widths do vary. International stadia are increasingly being designed to accommodate a number of sports that can attract large crowds, including football, rugby, athletics and cricket. Considerable research has been conducted into sports turf, in order to provide the appropriate specification for the intended purpose.
