ABSTRACT

The hot topic among management theorists during the early and mid-1980s was the influence of organizational culture on organizational success. The issues of cultural change, socialization, and communication should interest publications managers and the members of publications departments because publications departments usually attract people whose education, skills, and personalities deviate from the prevailing corporate culture more than those of any other department’s members. All the literature concedes the difficulty of changing cultures, and many of the cases chronicling attempts emphasize the futility of programs directed by leaders who are not themselves committed to the task. The recruitment and hiring process is competitive, and just as job candidates present their best faces in resumes and interviews, so most interviewers tend to present the best corporate face. The means of investment vary. The most common, of course, is financial through profit-sharing and stock ownership plans.
