ABSTRACT

Abe Shinzō became Prime Minister in 2012 and has been eager to upgrade Japan’s Defence Policy. This chapter focuses on the changes made by his administration. It shows why changes were needed and what improvements they have constituted for Japan’s ability to defend itself and increase the capabilities of its Self-Defence Forces when contributing to international operations, as well as how much more remains to be done in ensure to consolidate Japan’s power in a challenging environment.
