ABSTRACT

Change is not new and all change is difficult. Societies have developed and evolved from the beginning of time and individuals have adapted to those changes with varying degrees of success. The world within which the information worker lives and works has seen radical change during the last few decades, presenting many opportunities and challenges to the profession and individuals. This chapter explores some of those changes, and the implications for the careers of information workers, in the contexts of the ‘information society’ and the ‘knowledge economy’; both umbrella terms for issues and concepts that have changed the way we work and the expectations of employers. Specific organizational changes have been explored elsewhere throughout the book, and are also illustrated in the case studies.
