ABSTRACT

Having considered the changing and uncertain world of work in its widest context, it is important and also logical to consider the more specific (but equally rapidly changing) world of the information worker. Both these worlds have to be understood, in addition to the ways in which they interrelate with each other, in order to enable career development to take place. The understanding of this interrelationship is key to development, and can be achieved through analysis, communication, contextual understanding, and a willingness to be adaptable and flexible. The relationships, tensions, debates and predicaments between the changing world of the employer and the changing world of the worker are then able to be interpreted and correlated and so more clearly linked to strategies and developments. Career opportunities and development will also change, in conjunction with changing skills and attributes. These

skills and attributes have to be managed and actively pursued. This chapter focuses on the context of change, organizational dynamics, professional changes, and the analysis of the person and the professional within this change.
