ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the nature and extent of women's work in mining and the various factors that explain why their participation in the sector expands or contracts. It presents a brief overview of the mining sector in the Philippines to provide a context for the subsequent sections. The chapter focuses on three themes: women in the mining profession; corporate large scale mines in the Cordillera region and women's work; and small scale mining and women's work, and the relationship between large scale corporations and small scale operations. It looks at three mining companies one of which is the oldest in the Philippines while the two others are the country's only remaining large scale mines. All three companies are found in the Cordillera region, northern Philippines. The specific types of jobs in various areas include women as chief chemist, analytical chemists, chief metallurgist, senior geologist, program engineers, Gemcom geologists, and material test/instrumentation engineers.
