ABSTRACT

I will examine the “genderness” of the protests on two levels: firstly on the empirical, factual, level of participation, behavior, attitudes, and political representation; and secondly on the level of cultural/symbolic representation. In the last part of the chapter, I will relate the protests, as societal movements, to the feminist movement to examine their mutual influences and dependence in constructing civil society. The assumption here is that each of these movements was helping the other to “open up” society in a process of establishing democratic order.
