ABSTRACT
The past fifteen years of post-communist transition have been full of painful negations and paradoxes, some of which are visible in the situation of women: the standard complaint is that “women are the losers of the democratic changes”, yet there is still a resistance to Western feminist ideas and practices, and few signs of feminist movements in the region. Following the debates surrounding the differences between feminisms in the West and those in Eastern Europe (at conferences, in publications, and unofficial discourses) I was surprised to see similarities amongst the critiques of Western feminist theories expressed by women from regions as diverse as the Third World and Eastern Europe. Surprising as they are, I believe that such similarities need exploration.
