ABSTRACT
At their Brussels Summit meeting in May 1998, the heads of state and government of the European Union (EU) endorsed the decision to create an economic and monetary union (EMU) among 11 member states by 1 January 1999. In the process, the currencies of the participating member states will be replaced by one single European legal tender.
