ABSTRACT
In the sixteenth century Paris had no tradition of waterborne festivals in the manner of Venice or Lyon. However, the topography easily leant itself to such occasions. The Seine is a peaceful river and, as there were not yet many bridges in the capital, it was often crossed by boat.
