ABSTRACT

W. E. B. Du Bois' conception of the role of the educated elite underwent significant changes during his long career. The educated elite was an important concept that could be useful in the area of social change as it relates to politics, economics, education, and culture. Much of Du Bois' work in these areas was to enable the educated elite to eradicate the problems besetting Blacks. The present essay traces the development of the concept as it emerges in Du Bois' early essays and its persistence throughout his succeeding essays and books. Du Bois argues, there must be organizations and institutions developed from within Black communities assisting in the socialization of Blacks. Such organizations and institutions would require leaders, those whose education has provided them with technical skills. They would also have the ability to understand and analyze all facets of social life. In a sense, this educated elite would provide social guidance in terms of social goals and values.
