ABSTRACT

Diogenes Laertius was born in Laerte, a town in the former Roman province of Cilicia, situated on the southeastern coast of modern Turkey, north of Cyprus. The details of Diogenes’ life are uncertain, but the fact that he mentions Sextus Empiricus (c. ad 200) in his writings can easily support the commonly accepted idea that he was born and lived around the beginning of the third century.
