ABSTRACT

From the Old Danish skriuæ, Old Norse skrífa, derived from the Latin scribere.1 Its lexical meaning in Danish refers to the production of a text by means of putting letters together, or to the act of forming words through letters;2 in both cases, the referent is an action, which distinguishes “writing” from “a writing” (Skrift-noun) or “writings” (Skrifter-noun), the latter referring only to the finished result of the action of writing.3
