ABSTRACT

According to its lexical meaning, the Danish word Selvbedrag denotes one’s beingembroiled in an illusion brought about by oneself.1 The phenomenon of self-deception is described both in pseudonymous works and in texts published under the name “Søren Kierkegaard,” as well as in private notes. The most frequent references can be found in Works of Love, followed by Upbuilding Discourses in Various Spirits, Stages on Life’s Way, and in the writings contained in the posthumously published volume titled The Book on Adler.
