ABSTRACT
From the Old Norse líf, meaning “life.”1 The use of this Danish term seems to have arisen in the early nineteenth century, probably inspired by the prevalence of the German term Weltanschauung in the philosophy and literary criticism of the Romanticism and idealism that had become so influential in Denmark.2 Kierkegaard generally preferred Livs-Anskuelse to Verdens-Anskuelse, a term which more closely approximated the nuances of Weltanschauung, although he sometimes used both words interchangeably.
