The Danish word Ethik (modern spelling, etik) comes from the Latin ethica, which comes from the Greek adjective ἠθικός, “moral” (derived from the noun ἦθος, “custom” or “character”).1 The related term Sædelighed corresponds to the German word Sittlichkeit (meaning customary morality).2
