ABSTRACT
From German Katholizismus, French catholicisme, corresponding to the English Catholicism. Kierkegaard largely adopts the spellings given above,1 though, in recent usage, katolicisme, katolik, and katolsk are preferred. These terms are used of the Roman Catholic Church, with frequent reference to various aspects of Catholic life-for example, church doctrine, members, and rites-in contradistinction to those of other Christian bodies. Less commonly, it can signify the entire universal church, held together by what is considered right, orthodox doctrine.2
