ABSTRACT

From the Old Norse val, similar to German Wahl. The primary lexical meaning of the Danish term is the act of choosing between at least two options, equivalent to the English “choice” or “selection.” Valg also signifies the precondition for such an act of choosing: to have a choice, the availability of options. As an application of this general sense it can mean acts of choosing in specific contexts (for example, political ones), including the meanings of English words like vote, election, or poll.1
