ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview at local, regional and national levels of the measured impacts of the fuel crisis, comparing the lifestyle and business impacts with the transport impacts. It offers insight through examination of additional information collected routinely by business, leisure, transport operators and local government. The nature of the impacts of the fuel crisis on sporting activities was highly variable. Whilst the media extensively reported developments relating to professional sport, attention to the impacts upon amateur sport was extremely patchy and coverage was generally restricted to local rather than national organs of the media. The public also took more proactive measures to obtain the latest information on the crisis by utilising telecommunications services. The implications for the hospitality industry from the disruption caused to business by the fuel crisis were also mixed. The consequences of the crisis for food retailers were not limited to their retail outlets, It also had an impact upon the online grocery delivery market.
